A PERIODICAL NOVEL
A humor novel right up the alley of those who enjoy Bill Fitzhugh, Tim Dorsey, and Carl Hiaasen, The Weekend Warrior offers a spinout plot of a rogue writer's scamming to take over a San Diego TV station and tabloid, but with an interesting variation: it's studded with his eponymous weekly broadcast and columns he uses to weasel his way in. These morsels of acerbic wit, which reviewers have described as an amalgam of Dave Barry, Hunter Thompson, and P.J. O'Rourke, pop up throughout the book, sometimes furthering the plot, other times just lurking there ready to maim.
The resulting sex, scams, and deadline bombs produce a book that can be read straight through (with breaks for laughing out loud) but also lends itself to trips to the john for a focus on one column at a time. It's a racy romp across the media, led by a main character combining the qualities of Dr. Duke, Bad Santa, and Wile E. Coyote. |
